group-shot-2008Who's qualified from each state?

As the season progresses, we'll follow the six athletes from each state who've earned invitations to the Best of the U.S. National Championship, and track who has accepted their berths.

Early qualifying states are Florida (Great Clermont, March 25), and Nevada (Rage Triathlon, April 21). Six more states qualify in May between the 13th and 26h, then the floodgates open. Thirty-two states qualify in June, July and August, with as many as five qualifiers on any given weekend. The shift to a Spring Championship has made it possible to extend the qualifying season to some very desrving races in September. And Hawaii's qualifier has gone from being one of the earliest, to the absolute latest--it's again in Waikaloa, but now at the November Lavaman Keauhou. Full schedule

Check back often, as this gallery of America's best amateur triathletes grows.

    Welcome Team Arizona

When you're 53 years old and still kicking' butt on the race course, we can take the liberty of calling you a "matriarch", and that's just what we are going to do for Janie White, who lives in Paradise Valley and was the overall women's winner Sunday at Tempe International Triathlon. As such, she earns the title of Best of the U.S. State Champion and the right to lead Team Arizona at the National Championship next spring. First across the line for men was Elliott Lewis, who is a pro and therefore exempt from BOUS. But less than a minute behind him was young (26) Brian Folts from Phoenix, with Arrick Nietert hot on his heels. MEN Brian Folts, 26, Phoenix Arrick Nietert, 31, Tolleson Stephen Stromberg, 38, Phoenix WOMEN Janie White, 53, Parsdise Valley Sherianne Nelson, 37, Scottsdale Jeanine Cordova, 32, Phoenix

"It's a terrifying thing to see a bus wheel on top of you."

On April 21, personal trainer/coach Chelsea Duran, 29, was the third place Nevada finisher at RAGE Triathlon at Lake Mead, Nevada, thereby qualifying to race at the Best of the U.S. National Championship. That is her bike helmet underneath the school bus, and this is her story:

chelsea_busts1_img_4934_000_cropI started in triathlon almost 3 years ago. A client of mine came to me asking to be trained for a triathlon. I had been a cross country runner for a long time and had swum and cycled most of my life, but I had never done a triathlon. I figured the best way to train her for it, was to do one myself so I could give her first hand experience.

TriStuds: The Men of Minnesota Rock the Weekend

minnesota-flag-waving-emoticon-us-state-animatedOkay, we'll try to make this clear: Last summer at Minnesota Qualifier Lake Waconia Triathlon, the top three men were Dan Hedgecock, Patrick Parish and Matt Payne. Understatement alert: these guys are good. Their legs may be fish-belly white, but you only know it when they aren't racing, because when they are, their limbs are a blur. Matt had previously represented MN at the 2010 Championship and hit the podium in third place.
