McDaniel moves to top spot at Idaho's Spudman
Construction crews don't control the weather, of course; nevertheless construction on Moore's Peak Bridge over the Boise River can ultimately be blamed for the swim cancellation at Saturday's Spudman Triathlon. "It's the first time ever in 25 years we've had to cancel the swim," said race director Tim Severa.
The bridge project forced a change of venue, to an area above Lucky Peak Dam known as Barclay Bay, an area "known to sometimes have strong early morning winds," said Severa. It was only with great effort that the race crew was able to finally secure the swim buoys in place. Since the winds typically die down by late morning, the Marine Area Sheriff called for a one-hour postponement. Alas, both the Sheriff and the race's chief of water safety agreed the swim was simply not going to be possible. Relief seems to have been the reigning emotion over the cancellation. "Those white caps looked pretty bad," said Severa.
After qualifying in the second position a year ago, Boise's Kenny McDaniel, fitness trainer and former cross-country runner at BSU, came out on top of the bike-run format race. with Annamarie Hofstetter, also of Boise, and a soccer star at ISU, was the first place woman.
